Could the California theme parks reopen as early as March?

Disneyland

The Disneyland Resort theme parks have been closed since March 2020. California theme parks could reopen as soon as mid-March, but will Disneyland reopen then?

In order for theme parks to open in March, the counties they reside in need to reach the least-restrictive yellow/minimal tier 4 of the state’s Blueprint for a Safer Economy. It is highly unlikely that Orange County, where Disneyland resides, will reach that level in 6 weeks. Right now, it is more likely that Disneyland will reopen this summer.

State mandates require counties to remain in each tier for at least 3 weeks before they can move to a less-restrictive tier. With Disneyland in the most restrictive (purple) tier right now, they would need to wait 3 weeks for Orange County to move through the red tier and then another 3 weeks to move through the orange tier to finally be in the yellow tier. Also, once a county moves to a less-restrictive tier doesn’t mean they can’t move back to a more restrictive one.

If theme parks can’t reach the yellow tier, they may remain closed indefinitely. California also hasn’t given any guidance on how major theme parks can move out of the yellow tier and return to full operations. So even if Disneyland manages to reopen, capacity at the parks could be capped at 25% for a long time.

It would basically take a miracle for Disneyland to reopen before the summer months.
